🌿 #1 Must-Do Experience
1. Noosa National Park — Australia's Best Urban Coastal Walk
🌿 Must-Do
1
Noosa National Park Coastal Walk
Free
The coastal walk through Noosa National Park is widely considered one of the finest short walks in Australia. Starting from the end of Hastings Street and tracking along dramatic headland cliffs above the Pacific, the 3.5km one-way track passes Tea Tree Bay (a snorkelling hotspot), Boiling Pot, Dolphin Point, and Hell's Gates — where the ocean crashes through narrow rock channels with thunderous drama.
Koalas sleep in the eucalypts along the trail, and wild dolphins and migrating humpback whales (winter months) are regularly spotted from the lookouts. The park protects a remarkable 4,000 hectares of coastal heath and rainforest just minutes from one of Queensland's most upmarket towns.
💡 Local Tip: Walk out via the coastal track and return via the Valley of the Shadows inland trail for a complete loop. Start before 8am in summer to avoid crowds — and bring binoculars for whale spotting from the headland lookouts (July–November).
📍 Noosa Heads⏱ 2–3 hours💰 Free🐨 Koalas likely🚗 2 hrs from Brisbane
2. Eumundi Markets — Queensland's Best Artisan Market
🛍 Markets
2
Eumundi Artisan Markets
Free Entry
Running since 1979, Eumundi Markets have grown into one of Australia's largest and most beloved artisan markets — over 600 stalls of handcrafted furniture, jewellery, art, ceramics, organic food, live music, and street food spread across a beautifully shaded village precinct.
The atmosphere is genuinely magical on Saturday mornings when the whole town hums with activity. There are excellent coffee roasters, woodfire bakeries, and an extraordinary array of handmade Queensland crafts. Eumundi village itself is worth exploring beyond market hours for its heritage pubs, boutique galleries, and farm-to-table restaurants.
📍 Eumundi, QLD⏱ Sat 7am–2pm · Wed 8am–1:30pm💰 Free entry☕ Outstanding coffee
3. Glass House Mountains — Volcanic Peaks & Bushwalking
🗻 Hiking
3
Glass House Mountains National Park
Free
Rising dramatically from the coastal plain between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, the Glass House Mountains are a collection of volcanic plugs up to 556m tall — sacred to the Jinibara and Kabi Kabi peoples and one of Queensland's most arresting landscapes. Captain Cook named them in 1770, apparently reminded of the glass furnaces of his native Yorkshire.
The most popular climb is Mt Ngungun (5km return, 1.5 hours) — moderate difficulty with extraordinary 360-degree views across the entire range. More challenging: Mt Tibrogargan (4.4km, 2–3 hours, some rock scrambling) and the demanding Mt Beerwah (5km, 3–4 hours), the highest in the range. Easier circuit walks offer impressive views without the climb.
📍 Glass House Mountains, QLD⏱ 2–4 hours💰 Free🥾 Proper footwear required🌅 Sunrise recommended
4. Hastings Street, Noosa Heads
🍷 Dining
4
Hastings Street — Dining, Shopping & Sundowners
Free to Walk
Hastings Street is one of Australia's finest shopping and dining strips — a relaxed, palm-fringed promenade of boutique fashion retailers, acclaimed restaurants, wine bars, and luxury hotels running between the beach and Noosa National Park. It's upmarket without being pretentious, and the atmosphere at sunset with a cocktail on a restaurant terrace is quintessentially Noosa.
Best restaurants: Noosa Beach House (Peter Kuruvita's beautiful coastal restaurant), Wasabi (acclaimed Japanese), Locale (modern Italian), and Sum Yung Guys (inventive Southeast Asian). For coffee, Café Le Monde has been a Noosa institution for decades and remains one of the best spots for people-watching over a long breakfast.
💡 Local Tip: Visit on a weekday evening when the day-trippers have gone — Hastings Street at dusk with the restaurants filling and the beach glowing orange is genuinely one of the loveliest scenes in Australia.

5. Sunshine Beach & Surf Lessons

Learn to Surf — Sunshine Beach
From $60
The Sunshine Coast's consistent waves and long stretches of sandy beach make it one of Australia's best places to learn to surf. Sunshine Beach (just south of Noosa) and Coolum Beach offer reliable beginner breaks, while Noosa's First Point serves up perfect longboard waves that attract experienced surfers from around the world.
Multiple surf schools operate across the coast with lesson packages starting from $60 per person for a two-hour beginner group lesson. The warm Queensland water (21–26°C year-round) means no thick wetsuit required — just a rash vest and sunscreen. Many operators include board hire in their lesson price.
📍 Multiple locations⏱ 2 hours💰 From $60🌊 Year-round🌡 21–26°C water
6. Australia Zoo — Wildlife Capital of the World
🐊 Wildlife
6
Australia Zoo, Beerwah
$75 Adults
Founded by the late Steve Irwin and still run by Terri and Bindi Irwin, Australia Zoo at Beerwah is one of the best wildlife parks in Australia — full stop. The Crocoseum (a spectacular amphitheatre for wildlife demonstrations), tiger encounters, cheetah encounters, wombat and koala interactions, and over 1,200 animals across 100 acres make this a genuinely full-day experience.
The Irwin family's passion and conservation ethos is evident throughout. Unlike some large wildlife parks that can feel corporate, Australia Zoo still has an authentic, educationally driven feel. The Wildlife Warriors program provides exceptional conservation context to every exhibit, making visits genuinely enriching for adults and children alike.

7. Montville & the Hinterland Villages

Montville, Maleny & Mapleton
Scenic Drive
The Blackall Range hinterland behind the Sunshine Coast rises to 600m and is draped in subtropical rainforest. The villages of Montville, Maleny, and Mapleton perch on the escarpment with spectacular views to the coast and a cluster of galleries, organic cafés, artisan cheese shops, craft beer pubs, and day spas.
The drive along the Kondalilla Falls loop road is spectacular in any season — but particularly magical after rain when the waterfalls are thundering and the rainforest is vivid with new green growth. Maleny's Main Street has some of the Sunshine Coast's best independent bookshops, art galleries, and farm-fresh produce stores.

8. Noosa Everglades Eco Tour

Noosa Everglades Canoe or Kayak Tour
From $89
The Noosa Everglades — the only inland waterway of its kind outside the Florida Everglades — is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of extraordinary ecological significance. The crystal-clear, tea-coloured (tannins from reeds) waterways are teeming with birdlife: sea eagles, ospreys, jabiru storks, and whistling kites. Guided kayak and canoe tours navigate the twisting channels of Lake Cootharaba and the Noosa River headwaters in an experience of profound stillness and natural beauty.
Cooee Tours offers guided half-day and full-day everglades kayaking tours departing from Noosa. These are among our most requested experiences for visitors seeking something genuinely different from the usual beach holiday.
📍 Noosa Everglades⏱ Half or full day💰 From $89🦅 Exceptional birdlife🌿 UNESCO protected
9. Mooloolaba Beach & SEA LIFE Aquarium
Mooloolaba is the Sunshine Coast's most family-friendly beach town — a beautiful crescent of golden sand with calm, patrolled swimming conditions, a thriving restaurant scene along The Esplanade, and the excellent SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast aquarium (formerly Underwater World). The harbour also serves as the base for fishing and whale-watching charter vessels during the humpback migration season (July–November). The Mooloolaba Spit foreshore has undergone significant improvements recently, with new parkland, a boardwalk, and the popular Boat Shed restaurant.
💡 Local Tip: Mooloolaba's patrolled beach is calmer and better for families with young children than the more exposed breaks at Noosa or Coolum. Book a whale-watching vessel from the harbour for a morning tour in winter — sighting rates are exceptional.
10. Caloundra & Bulcock Beach
Caloundra at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast is a classic Queensland beach town with a wonderful selection of surf and calm-water beaches for every condition. Kings Beach is the most popular for families (rock pool, ocean pool, patrolled swimming), while the broader Caloundra headland walk connects multiple beaches over a scenic 4km loop. The new Caloundra Street Party every Friday evening is a wonderful community event with food trucks, live music, and local vendors — a genuinely fun evening for all ages.

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve
On the escarpment above Maleny, this reserve preserves a remnant patch of subtropical rainforest with walking trails through ancient brush box and strangler fig forest. The Glass House Mountains Discovery Centre interprets the volcanic landscape visible from the lookout, and the resident pademelons (small wallabies) are almost always visible in the undergrowth at dusk.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding on Noosa River
The Noosa River offers one of Australia's best flat-water SUP experiences. Multiple hire operators along Gympie Terrace in Noosaville offer boards from around $30/hour, and the calm upstream stretches through Noosaville and Tewantin are safe for complete beginners. The river scenery — houseboats, mangroves, pelicans — is distinctively Queensland.
📍 Noosaville⏱ 1–2 hrs💰 From $30/hr hire🦅 Birdlife
Pomona & the Majestic Theatre
The hinterland town of Pomona is home to the Majestic Theatre — the oldest continuously operating cinema in Australia, still screening films every Saturday night as it has since 1921. Combine a visit with Pomona's excellent heritage streetscape, Main Street cafés, and the extraordinary King of the Mountain foot race (annually in July), one of Australia's most iconic competitive events.

Stay the Night in Noosa
If there's one piece of advice above all else: don't day-trip the Sunshine Coast. Stay at least one night in Noosa to experience the town after the day-trippers leave — the evening stroll along Hastings Street when the restaurants fill, the sunrise on Main Beach before the crowds arrive, and the magical morning light through the national park. Noosa at these quiet hours is one of the loveliest places in all of Australia.
📍 Noosa Heads🌅 Stay 2+ nights⭐ Our top recommendation
🚗 Getting There from Brisbane: The Sunshine Coast is 1.5–2 hours north of Brisbane by car via the Bruce Highway, then Steve Irwin Way or the Sunshine Motorway to Noosa. Cooee Tours' Sunshine Coast day tours depart from Brisbane CBD with hotel pickups available — no car or driving stress required. We cover Glass House Mountains, Eumundi Markets, and Noosa in a single day for an unbeatable value experience.
❓ FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Sunshine Coast best known for?
The Sunshine Coast is best known for Noosa — its beautiful national park, upmarket Hastings Street, and pristine beaches. But the region is also famous for Australia Zoo, the Eumundi Markets, the Glass House Mountains, the hinterland villages of Montville and Maleny, and an exceptional food and café culture that has emerged over the last decade.
Is the Sunshine Coast worth visiting from Brisbane?
Absolutely. At just 1.5 hours from Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips available. That said, it thoroughly rewards a longer stay — most visitors find that a full weekend is the minimum to do both the coast and the hinterland justice.
Can you do a Sunshine Coast day trip without a car?
Yes — Cooee Tours operates guided day trips from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast with hotel pickups and all transport included. The Sunshine Coast itself also has some local bus and ferry connections, though a car or guided tour gives you much greater flexibility to explore the hinterland and multiple beaches.
When is the best time to visit the Sunshine Coast?
The best times to visit are Autumn (March–May) and Spring (September–November) — warm, sunny days with fewer crowds and ideal hiking weather. Winter (June–August) brings whale watching season and is popular but busier. Summer is hot and occasionally stormy, though the beaches remain wonderful for swimming.
How many days do you need on the Sunshine Coast?
A minimum of 2 full days to cover the coast highlights (Noosa National Park, Hastings Street, a beach). Allow 3–4 days to properly explore the hinterland villages, Glass House Mountains, Eumundi Markets, and take a Noosa Everglades tour. For Australia Zoo, add an extra day from your base.
