The Sunshine Coast is one of Australia's most consistently underestimated regions. Most visitors hear "Noosa" and assume a beach holiday. What they find β if they look beyond the sand β is a lush hinterland of volcanic ranges, a market scene of national significance, and a food culture that punches harder than any coastal region its size in Australia. This is the complete guide from people who explore it every week.
Top 10 Experiences Discover the HinterlandIn order of how frequently our guests call them the highlight of their visit
The 2.7km coastal track from Noosa Heads to Hells Gates lookout is one of the finest short coastal walks in Queensland β paperbark forest, wildflower heath, resident koalas in the trees, sea eagles overhead, and dramatic clifftop views of the Pacific below. Our guides have walked it hundreds of times and know exactly which trees the koalas favour. The sighting rate on guided visits is extraordinarily high.
600+ stalls, live music from 8am, artisan producers direct from farm and studio, and a community character that's been building since 1979. Eumundi Markets (Wednesday and Saturday) are one of the genuinely unmissable experiences in Southeast Queensland β not just "a market" but a cultural institution that reflects exactly what the Sunshine Coast's hinterland produces when it's at its most creative and abundant.
Protected inside the national park headland, Noosa Main Beach is unusually calm by Queensland standards β the headland deflects the swell and the river mouth creates a partial lagoon effect on the southern end. The water is turquoise, the beach is well-maintained, and Hastings Street immediately behind it is one of Australia's finest beachfront dining and shopping strips. The combination is genuinely exceptional.
A 90-metre cascade into a rock pool in the Blackall Range β accessed via a 2.7km return walk through ancient hoop pine and subtropical rainforest in Kondalilla National Park. Most visitors to the Sunshine Coast never leave the beach long enough to discover this. The forest is dominated by hoop pines, piccabeen palms, and strangler figs that can be 400+ years old. The falls pool is suitable for swimming in warmer months.
Perched at 450 metres above the coast in the Blackall Range, Montville is one of Southeast Queensland's most distinctive heritage villages β a single main street of tin-roofed shops, galleries, artisan food producers, and cafΓ©s that look out over the Glasshouse Mountains on the inland horizon. The drive up from the coast takes 30 minutes and the drop in temperature is immediate and welcome.
Mooloolaba is the Sunshine Coast's most animated beach town β a long crescent of patrolled beach backed by a lively esplanade of restaurants, bars, and surf shops. Less exclusive than Noosa, more accessible than the hinterland villages, and genuinely fun. The Mooloolah River mouth creates a protected swimming area popular with families, and the Mooloolaba Surf Club delivers a perfectly decent beach meal with an exceptional view.
Technically on the Sunshine Coast hinterland fringe (at Beerwah, 45 minutes south of Noosa), Australia Zoo is one of Queensland's premier wildlife experiences β 600+ animals, the legendary crocodile shows, Africa Savannah with cheetahs and giraffes, and the Wildlife Hospital open to public viewing. Many visitors pair a Noosa day with an Australia Zoo day for a comprehensive Sunshine Coast experience.
Maleny sits at the northern end of the Blackall Range with what many visitors consider the finest view on the entire Sunshine Coast β the Glasshouse Mountains rising from the flat coastal plain spread before you like a geological illustration. Maleny Dairies produces exceptional artisan cheese and dairy available direct from the farm. The town has a strong arts and environmental community with good independent cafΓ©s and galleries.
The Noosa River system extends 40km inland through a remarkable network of lakes, waterways, and the Noosa Everglades β one of only two everglades systems in the world (the other is in Florida). Kayaking through the upper river and Everglades delivers absolute stillness, extraordinary birdlife, and a perspective on the Sunshine Coast's ecology that no road-based experience can approach.
No chain restaurants. No fast food. No high-rise hotels. Noosa's Hastings Street made these decisions decades ago and the result is one of Australia's most pleasant main strips β a single beachfront road of independent boutiques, acclaimed restaurants, and cafΓ©s that consistently feature in national best-of lists. The Noosa Eat & Drink Festival each May turns this strip into a national food event of considerable significance.
Eumundi Markets, Noosa National Park koala walk, Hastings Street, and the hinterland β all in one day from Brisbane. Hotel pickup included, max 14 guests.
Each beach has a distinct character β here's how to choose
The Sunshine Coast's most famous beach β calm, turquoise, and backed by the national park headland. Best for swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, and access to Hastings Street dining. Crowd levels vary dramatically by season.
The coast's most social beach β long crescent, reliable surf, patrolled daily, and backed by a vibrant esplanade. Best for families and visitors who want beach plus dining in one compact area. Less exclusive but more animated than Noosa.
The surfer's choice β consistent beach break, less developed than Mooloolaba, and a local community feel. Mount Coolum National Park behind the beach adds a distinctive volcanic backdrop. Excellent for morning surf sessions before the wind comes up.
One of Queensland's most beautiful small beaches β inside the national park, accessible only on foot via the coastal track. Protected cove with clear turquoise water, no crowds, and paperbark trees reaching over the sand. A 1km walk from the Noosa Heads car park.
The Sunshine Coast's southernmost town has four distinct beaches within 2km β Moffat Beach for surf, Bulcock Beach for calm family swimming, Kings Beach for the esplanade, and Currimundi Lake for freshwater. Caloundra is underrated and genuinely excellent.
A low-key surf beach north of Coolum with a beautiful village behind it β good cafΓ©s, a Sunday market, and none of the Noosa prices or crowds. The beach itself is long, wild, and backed by a national park foreshore reserve. An excellent discovery for visitors staying in the Noosa area.
The Blackall Range sits 20 kilometres inland from the beach strip, rising to 450 metres above sea level and running northβsouth for 50 kilometres. On one side faces the Pacific Ocean; on the other, the Glass House Mountains and the inland plains of Queensland stretch to the horizon. The range contains some of the most intact subtropical rainforest in Southeast Queensland.
The villages perched along the range edge β Montville, Maleny, Mapleton, Flaxton β have developed a distinctive cultural identity over the past three decades: independent galleries, artisan food producers, farmers who sell direct, and cafΓ©s that take the local produce seriously. It's a version of the Sunshine Coast that doesn't feature in any resort brochure and that rewards visitors enormously for the 20-minute detour from the coast.
90m waterfall, ancient hoop pine forest, natural rock pool. 2.7km return. Best in late summer when water flow is highest.
Several small wineries produce interesting cool-climate varieties from the range altitude. Mapleton and Flaxton both have cellar doors.
A dramatic lookout over the Obi Obi Valley with 120m falls below. 5-minute walk from the car park. Extraordinary for photography.
Artisan dairy with farm shop. Their flavoured milks are a local institution. Views of the Glass House Mountains from the property.
Every region has one thing that defines it beyond its landscape. For the Sunshine Coast, it's Eumundi. The Heritage Markets on Wednesday mornings and all day Saturday have been running since 1979 and have grown to encompass 600+ regular stalls β a genuinely astounding variety of handmade, homegrown, and locally produced goods that reflect 45 years of artisan culture accumulating in one remarkable small town.
The food alone justifies the visit β Sunshine Coast farmers selling direct, spice producers who've been at the same stall for 20 years, bakers whose sourdough requires a 7am arrival if you want a loaf, and coffee roasters who source single-origin beans and charge accordingly. Live music runs from 8am. The village itself β a beautifully preserved timber heritage streetscape β adds context to the market's sense of place.
A Cooee Tours Sunshine Coast day tour on Wednesday or Saturday includes a stop at Eumundi as part of a full day that also covers Noosa National Park, the coastal walk, and Montville hinterland. Morning tea credit is included on market days.
Book Sunshine Coast Tour (includes Eumundi)Saturday mornings at the Noosa Civic β local producers selling direct. Smaller than Eumundi but genuinely excellent. The strawberry season stalls (AugustβOctober) are extraordinary. Good coffee on-site.
A smaller, community-focused Sunday market in the beautiful Peregian Beach village amphitheatre. Local art, handmade goods, and food stalls in a relaxed beachside setting. Perfect before or after a Peregian Beach swim.
Monthly on Saturday mornings at the Maleny showgrounds β a strong local community market with hinterland producers, homemade food, and the kind of social atmosphere that reflects Maleny's strong sense of place. Check dates before visiting.
Each town on the Sunshine Coast is genuinely distinct β here's what to expect from each
Queensland's most prestigious beach town β national park headland, Hastings Street, calm turquoise beach, and a self-conscious refusal to permit high-rise development or fast food chains. Expensive, beautiful, and genuinely worth it.
A small heritage village that punches enormously above its size thanks to its famous Wednesday and Saturday markets. The town between market days is quiet and beautiful β the old pub, the heritage buildings, and the antique shops are all worth a look.
The Blackall Range's most visited heritage village β tin-roofed main street at 450 metres elevation, art galleries, homemade fudge and chocolate shops, and views over the Glass House Mountains. Excellent in every season; spectacular in the misty winter mornings.
The hinterland's most community-minded town β cooperative businesses, strong arts culture, excellent cheese at Maleny Dairies, and what many consider the Sunshine Coast's finest view of the Glass House Mountains from the lookout above town.
The most animated beach town on the Sunshine Coast β long patrolled beach, esplanade lined with restaurants and bars, and Underwater World (SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast) for families. Less exclusive than Noosa but more genuine than most tourist strips.
Two smaller hinterland villages just north of Montville, both with exceptional lookouts, small wineries, and a quieter character that rewards visitors who push past Montville. Mapleton Falls is a 5-minute walk from town. Flaxton Gardens is one of the region's most beautiful properties.
Where to find koalas, dolphins, whales, and more β wild and in their natural habitat
The coastal track through Noosa National Park is genuine koala habitat. Our guides know which paperbark trees the resident koalas favour β sighting rates on guided walks are very high. Spring (AugβOct) is best for mother and joey sightings. No enclosure, no managed encounter β genuinely wild animals in functioning coastal ecosystems.
Bottlenose dolphins regularly patrol the Mooloolah River mouth and Mooloolaba Harbour. Morning boat tours (several operators at The Wharf) have high encounter rates year-round. Kayakers on the river also frequently see dolphins surfacing alongside them. One of the more accessible wild dolphin encounters in Queensland.
Humpback whales migrate north along the Queensland coast from June through October, with peak numbers in JulyβSeptember. The Noosa headland lookouts and the Mooloolaba boat tours both offer excellent whale watching. Sightings from Hells Gates lookout in Noosa National Park are common during the season.
The Noosa Everglades river system hosts one of Southeast Queensland's richest concentrations of waterbirds β jabiru storks, sea eagles, azure kingfishers, and the endangered ground parrot are all recorded here. The upper reaches of the river, accessible by kayak or guided boat tour, are the most productive birding area.
Loggerhead and green sea turtles are commonly encountered while snorkelling or diving around the Sunshine Coast's rocky headlands. The Mudjimba Island and Mooloolaba reefs both have reliable turtle populations. Tangalooma Island (1 hour south) has an excellent snorkelling site with resident turtles.
Not strictly "on" the Sunshine Coast but adjacent β Australia Zoo at Beerwah is 45 minutes south of Noosa and combines naturally with a Sunshine Coast visit. 600+ animals including cheetahs, giraffes, crocodiles, and the full range of Australian native species. Our guided day tours include zoo entry and hotel pickup.
What to do when the beach isn't enough
Coolum Beach, Mooloolaba, and Peregian Beach all have reliable beach breaks and multiple surf schools offering beginner lessons. Noosa's national park point break is considered one of Queensland's best longboard waves β guided by an experienced local, it's genuinely learnable for beginners willing to put in a morning.
The Noosa River from the Hastings Street water access point provides flat, calm paddling through mangroves, past lakeside holiday houses, and into the wider river system where dolphins are regularly encountered. Stand-up paddleboards and kayaks are available for hire at multiple points along the river.
Mooloolaba is the Sunshine Coast's diving hub β the HMAS Brisbane wreck (deliberately sunk 2005, 28m depth) is one of Queensland's finest dive sites, with significant marine life colonising the hull. Mudjimba Island and Wolf Rock (Double Island Point) are the region's standout natural dive sites.
The Blackall Range hinterland has extensive mountain biking trails ranging from family-friendly gravel paths to technical single-track descents. The Mapleton and Kondalilla area has the best trail network. Bike hire is available in Maroochydore and Noosa.
Skydive Australia operates from Coolum Beach, offering tandem jumps over the Sunshine Coast with views of the beach strip, hinterland ranges, and Glass House Mountains from altitude. On clear days, the panorama extends from Brisbane to the Noosa headland β one of the most spectacular skydive views in Australia.
Several of the Glass House Mountains volcanic plugs have established rock climbing and bouldering routes. Mount Tibrogargan and Mount Beerwah are the most popular with guided climbing groups. This is technical climbing β guides and equipment are essential for anything beyond the walking tracks.
If you have a single day and want to see the region at its best β here's how a Cooee Tours guide would structure it on a Wednesday or Saturday.

Every beach on the Sunshine Coast β Noosa, Mooloolaba, Coolum, Peregian, Caloundra β is free to access. Most are patrolled daily by Surf Life Saving Queensland between the flags. Swimming between the flags is always the safe choice.
Entry to Eumundi Heritage Markets is free β you pay only for what you buy. Wednesday and Saturday from 8am. Parking is available in the village (small fee) or walk from the free parking on the town outskirts.

Multiple free lookout points along the Glass House Mountains Tourist Drive β the Lookout Road summit near Beerburrum, the Wild Horse Mountain lookout, and the lookout at the Glasshouse Mountains township. All free, all spectacular.

The Blackall Range Tourist Drive (from Landsborough to Kenilworth via Maleny, Montville, and Mapleton) is one of Southeast Queensland's most beautiful self-drive routes β free to drive, extraordinary views throughout, with stops that cost only what you choose to spend.
The Yaroomba to Peregian Beach coastal boardwalk and path runs 7km along the foreshore past lake systems, beach access points, and coastal heath with excellent birdlife. Flat, easy, and extraordinary β almost entirely unknown to visitors.
The reservoir above Montville that supplies the Sunshine Coast's water β and one of its most serene and least-visited beauty spots. The lookout above the dam wall faces across the full valley with the hinterland ranges behind. A 5-minute drive from Montville village.
What each season adds to the experience
Hot, humid, and lively. Beach season at its peak β warm ocean, long days, vibrant Hastings Street. Eumundi Markets are busy but atmospheric. Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent but brief. School holiday crowds peak in late December and January β accommodation books out fast.
Our favourite Sunshine Coast season. Humidity drops, temperatures are perfect (22β26Β°C), and the hinterland is at its most atmospheric β morning mist in the valleys, extraordinary light on the ranges. Ocean still warm through April. Shoulder pricing on accommodation.
Spectacularly clear and cool β perfect for walking tracks, national park exploration, and the Eumundi Markets in crisp morning air. Whale watching season begins in June. Hinterland mornings can be cold (8Β°C) but gloriously clear. July school holidays bring a brief crowd peak.
Wildflowers in the hinterland heath. Koalas with joeys on the Noosa coastal track. Whale watching extending through October. Warming ocean returning from November. The Noosa Triathlon (October/November) and Noosa Eat & Drink Festival (May) make spring and early autumn event season.
How the Sunshine Coast compares to the region's other major visitor destinations β and where it clearly wins.
Quieter beaches, better food scene, stronger hinterland culture, and a more artisan character. Gold Coast wins on nightlife, theme parks, and beach city scale. Sunshine Coast wins on quality of experience for adults and food lovers.
Noosa and Byron are the closest comparisons in Australia. Byron has stronger bohemian mythology; Noosa is more polished and better resourced. Eumundi beats any Byron market. Both are excellent; the choice is about vibe preference.
Sunshine Coast gives you the nature and food the city can't β coastal national park, working farms, artisan market culture, and the hinterland. Brisbane gives you culture, nightlife, and urban energy. Both belong on a Queensland itinerary.
The Glass House Mountains are at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast region β easily combined in a single day. Our Glass House Mountains tour covers the volcanic peaks while a Sunshine Coast tour covers Noosa and Eumundi. Together they give the complete picture.
Eumundi Markets, Noosa National Park koala walk, Hastings Street, hinterland villages, and Glass House Mountains β all reachable on guided day tours from Brisbane. Hotel pickup included, max 14 guests, expert local guides.
