South Australia Tours —
Beyond the Expected

South Australia is Australia's most underestimated state — and the most rewarding once you discover it. Covering 984,000 km² of extraordinary diversity, it stretches from the world-renowned wine regions clustered around Adelaide to the ancient Flinders Ranges, the opal-mining moonscape of Coober Pedy, and one of the planet's great wildlife sanctuaries on Kangaroo Island.

South Australia tours pack more contrasts per kilometre than almost anywhere in the country. Within a single day of Adelaide, you can be tasting the world's finest Shiraz at a 130-year-old Barossa Valley estate, swimming with Australian sea lions on a wild beach, or hiking through a 550-million-year-old geological amphitheatre in the Flinders Ranges. For the truly adventurous, Port Lincoln's Great White Shark cage dives are among the most exhilarating wildlife encounters on the planet.

The state is also home to two of Australia's most iconic rail journeys — the Ghan (Adelaide to Darwin through the Red Centre) and the Indian Pacific (Adelaide to Perth across the Nullarbor) — experiences that don't just transport you between cities but transform your understanding of the continent's scale.

World-Class Wine Regions
Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Coonawarra — among the world's most celebrated wine appellations.
Kangaroo Island Wildlife
Called "Australia's Galapagos" — wild sea lions, koalas, echidnas and rare bird species in pristine national park.
Great White Sharks
The world's premier Great White cage diving destination — Neptune Islands off Port Lincoln, year-round encounters.
Ancient Flinders Ranges
Wilpena Pound — a natural amphitheatre of 550-million-year-old mountains, sacred to the Adnyamathanha people.

South Australia Tours —
FAQ 2026

Planning a South Australia tour involves some genuinely interesting choices — which wine region, how long on Kangaroo Island, whether the Great White dive is really doable. Our SA travel team has been through all of it. Here are the answers we give most often.

South Australia consistently over-delivers for visitors who plan it well. Let our specialists help you get the most out of it.

SA Travel Specialists

Our South Australia team has personally visited every Barossa estate, walked the Wilpena Pound circuit, dived with Great Whites off Port Lincoln and spent three days on Kangaroo Island. Honest advice, every time.

Talk to an SA Specialist →
For a first visit, our editors recommend: (1) a Barossa Valley wine day tour from Adelaide — the state's most famous experience and genuinely world-class; (2) a Kangaroo Island day tour — Seal Bay sea lions alone are worth the trip; (3) a McLaren Vale half-day tour if you have an afternoon free; and (4) The Ghan or Indian Pacific if you're connecting to Darwin or Perth. For adventure travellers, Great White cage diving at Port Lincoln is unmissable. A well-planned 5-day SA circuit covers all the essentials without rushing.
The Barossa Valley is 70km northeast of Adelaide — about 60 minutes by car via the Sturt Highway. Guided day tours from Adelaide typically collect guests from city hotels between 8–9am and return by 5–6pm, giving a full day of touring. Within the Barossa, e-bikes and cycling tours are increasingly popular for moving between cellar doors on the flat valley floor. The historic town of Nuriootpa serves as the main commercial hub; the charming towns of Tanunda and Angaston are the most atmospheric bases.
The ferry departs from Cape Jervis — 1.5 hours south of Adelaide — to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. The Sealink crossing takes 40–45 minutes. Most guided Kangaroo Island day tours from Adelaide include all transport: coach transfer to Cape Jervis, return ferry crossing, and a full day of guided touring on the island. Scenic flights from Adelaide Airport to Kingscote (30 minutes) are included in premium overnight tour packages and are a spectacular way to arrive. The island is large (450km²) so self-driving requires a full car rental day and good planning.
Autumn (March–May) is peak wine touring season — harvest in late March and April fills the Barossa with activity. Cellar doors host harvest lunches and special barrel tastings, vines turn gold and red, and the whole valley has an energised atmosphere that's unique to the season. Wine tours operate year-round though; spring (September–November) is also excellent with wildflowers and cooler, more comfortable touring weather. Summer (December–February) can reach 38°C+ in the valley — not ideal for extensive outdoor touring but cellar doors operate well in air-conditioned comfort.
Yes — Great White cage diving at Port Lincoln's Neptune Islands has an excellent safety record spanning decades. Participants are always inside a steel cage attached to the side of the dive boat; you are never free-swimming with the sharks. No scuba certification is required — the cage dives use snorkel equipment at the surface, though Platinum dives go to 5m depth with supplied air. The Neptune Islands are a protected marine park with a healthy Great White population; encounters are virtually guaranteed. You must be 16+ and in reasonable health. Return flight from Adelaide to Port Lincoln takes 1 hour.
Both trains depart from Adelaide. The Ghan travels north: Adelaide → Alice Springs → Katherine → Darwin, covering 2,979km in approximately 54 hours. It operates weekly and includes off-train excursions at Alice Springs and Katherine Gorge. The Indian Pacific travels west: Adelaide → Cook → Kalgoorlie → Perth, covering 4,352km (the longest single rail run in the world) in approximately 65 hours. Both offer Gold Service cabins (all meals, comfortable private compartment) and Platinum Service (larger cabin, restaurant dining, butler). The Ghan is the more popular choice for international visitors; the Indian Pacific is favoured by those connecting to or from Western Australia.
