Australia at a Glance

Twelve things every first-time visitor should know before they land.

Power Plug — Type I

Three flat pins in a V-shape (AS/NZS 3112). Voltage is 230V at 50Hz. Most modern devices are dual-voltage — check your charger label.

Drive on the Left

Australia drives on the left. Overseas licences are valid for 3 months. Hire a 4WD for any outback or Kimberley travel — 2WD is insufficient.

Reciprocal Healthcare

UK, NZ, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Malta have reciprocal Medicare agreements with Australia.

Visa Required

Most visitors need an eVisitor (651) or ETA (601) — apply online before travel, not at the border. Working Holiday visas require advance planning.

Currency — AUD

Australian Dollar (A$). Tap-and-pay is universal. ATMs widely available in cities. Carry cash for remote areas and markets. Tipping is not obligatory.

UV Is Extreme

Australian UV can reach 11+ (extreme) even on cloudy days. SPF 50+ sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are essential — reapply every 2 hours outdoors.

Mobile & SIM

Optus, Telstra, and Woolworths Mobile are the main prepaid SIM options. Telstra has the best regional coverage. No signal in large parts of the outback.

Multiple Time Zones

Australia spans AEST (Sydney/Brisbane), ACST (Adelaide/Darwin, +30 mins quirk), and AWST (Perth). Always double-check times crossing state lines.

Wildlife Safety

Snakes, spiders, box jellyfish, crocodiles — Australia has venomous wildlife, but fatalities are rare with basic precautions. Never feed or approach wildlife.

Seasons Are Reversed

Australian summer is December–February; winter is June–August. The tropical north has a Wet season (Nov–Apr) and Dry season (May–Oct) instead.

Biosecurity Laws

Australia has strict biosecurity. Declare all food, plants, seeds, and wooden items on arrival. Fines are substantial — when in doubt, declare it.

Swim Between the Flags

Patrolled beaches mark safe swimming zones with red and yellow flags. Rips are common and deadly. Never swim outside the flags, even in calm conditions.
