"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." Step into Middle-earth on a guided day trip from Auckland.
About This Tour
Journey to the heart of the Shire and discover the world-famous Hobbiton Movie Set, nestled in the picturesque Waikato farmland near Matamata, New Zealand. This fully guided day tour from Auckland takes you through the stunning 12-acre movie set where Sir Peter Jackson filmed the epic Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies — three of the highest-grossing film franchises in history.
Walk in the footsteps of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, explore all 44 unique hobbit holes with their perfectly manicured gardens, visit the iconic Green Dragon Inn for a complimentary beverage, and stand beneath the Party Tree where Bilbo celebrated his eleventy-first birthday. Our expert guides bring the set to life with behind-the-scenes stories about the films' production, the incredible level of detail Sir Peter Jackson demanded, and the real New Zealand farming family whose land became the most famous movie set on Earth.
Whether you're a die-hard Tolkien devotee or simply looking for one of New Zealand's most magical experiences, this tour delivers wonder at every turn. Combine with Waitomo Caves for the ultimate Waikato day out.
What You'll See
Explore every intricately detailed hobbit dwelling — from the famous Bag End with its round green door to the smallest homes tucked into the hillside. Each has unique gardens, props, and character.
End your tour with a complimentary drink at the authentic hobbit pub — choose from exclusive Hobbiton ales, apple cider, ginger beer, or non-alcoholic options. The pub's interior is spectacular.
See the famous oak tree (actually a 26-tonne artificial tree with 250,000 hand-painted leaves) where Bilbo celebrated his 111th birthday party in The Fellowship of the Ring.
Our guides share fascinating production secrets — how the set was built twice, the forced-perspective tricks, and the remarkable story of the Alexander family whose farm became Middle-earth.
Pause at the best angles for photos — Bag End's front door, the mill and double-arched bridge, the hobbit clotheslines, and the stunning panoramic overlook of the entire Shire.
The 2-hour scenic drive from Auckland through the Waikato is beautiful in itself — rolling green hills, Hauraki Plains farmland, and mountain views.

Yes, and we highly recommend it. Our popular Hobbiton + Waitomo Combo ($289pp) visits both in one day — it's the best value way to see two of New Zealand's top attractions. The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are only an hour from Hobbiton, making the combination very efficient.
We recommend booking at least 2–4 weeks in advance, especially during peak season (December–March) and school holidays. Tours frequently sell out. Book online for instant confirmation or contact us for same-week availability.
