About Kakadu

Australia's Largest National Park

Kakadu National Park is a dual World Heritage Site — recognised for both its outstanding natural beauty and its extraordinary cultural significance to the Bininj/Mungguy Aboriginal people who have lived here for over 65,000 years. Covering nearly 20,000 square kilometres of the Northern Territory's Top End, it's a landscape of towering sandstone escarpments, vast floodplains, monsoon rainforests, and tidal wetlands teeming with wildlife.

Cooee Tours' Kakadu itineraries range from a single-day wildlife adventure to an immersive five-day journey that includes exclusive access to Arnhem Land. Every tour departs from Darwin, includes return transfers, and is led by expert guides with deep knowledge of the park's ecology, Aboriginal culture, and hidden corners that most visitors never see.

FAQ

Kakadu Tour Questions & Answers

When is the best time to visit Kakadu?

The dry season (May–October) is the most popular time — roads are accessible, skies are clear, and wildlife concentrates around shrinking billabongs making it ideal for spotting crocs and birds. Jim Jim and Twin Falls are accessible during this period. The wet season (November–April) offers spectacular waterfalls at full flow and lush green landscapes, but some areas may be inaccessible due to flooding. Our 1-day tour runs year-round; extended tours operate May–October. See our seasonal Kakadu guide.

How do I get to Kakadu?

Kakadu is approximately 2.5 hours (250 km) east of Darwin via the Arnhem Highway. All Cooee Kakadu tours include return transfers from Darwin hotels and the airport — just book your tour and we'll take care of the rest. For those driving independently, the park is well signposted from Darwin. Parks Australia directions.

Are Kakadu tours safe with crocodiles?

Yes. All tours follow strict Be Crocwise safety protocols. Wildlife cruises use purpose-built boats, and swimming is only at designated crocodile-managed areas (like Jim Jim Falls plunge pool, which is surveyed and cleared by rangers). Our guides are trained in crocodile awareness and carry first aid equipment.

What should I pack?

Lightweight, breathable clothing (long sleeves for sun/insects), sturdy walking shoes, hat, SPF 50+ sunscreen, strong insect repellent (tropical-strength recommended), swimsuit, reusable water bottle, camera with spare batteries, and any personal medications. A detailed packing list is provided with your booking. See our Kakadu packing guide.

Are the Aboriginal cultural experiences respectful?

Absolutely. We work directly with Traditional Owners and Aboriginal-owned tourism operators throughout Kakadu and Arnhem Land. All cultural experiences are led or approved by local Aboriginal guides, and we follow strict cultural protocols. Our approach prioritises authentic, respectful, and economically beneficial encounters for local communities. Learn more about our values.

Do tours include park entry fees?

Yes. Kakadu park passes ($40 per adult) are included in all tour prices, along with transport, accommodation (multi-day), meals, guided activities, and any required Arnhem Land permit fees.

Can I combine Kakadu with other Top End tours?

Yes. Many guests combine Kakadu with our Litchfield National Park day tour, the Red Centre Explorer (Uluru & Kings Canyon), or our multi-day East Coast tours. Contact us to build a custom Top End itinerary.

Is Kakadu suitable for families?

Families are welcome on all tours. Children aged 6+ can join standard tours with a parent. Some walks (Jim Jim Falls, Twin Falls) involve moderate scrambling. For families with younger children, we offer private family tours with tailored itineraries and flexible pacing.
