The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest living organism — a UNESCO World Heritage marine ecosystem stretching 2,300 kilometres along Queensland's coastline, encompassing around 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands. It is home to more than 1,500 fish species, 400 types of coral, 4,000 varieties of molluscs, and countless other marine animals including sea turtles, dolphins, reef sharks and seasonal humpback whales.

Cairns is Australia's premier gateway to the Great Barrier Reef — uniquely positioned to access some of the healthiest and most spectacular outer reef sections. Modern high-speed catamarans depart daily from Cairns Marina, reaching outer reef pontoons in as little as 90 minutes. Whether you want to snorkel vibrant coral gardens, learn to dive with PADI instructors, drift above the reef in a glass-bottom boat, or soar over coral cays by helicopter — the full spectrum of reef experiences launches from this city.

Reef tours depart daily from Cairns year-round — each season delivers its own unique marine encounters and conditions.

Warmer water (26–30°C), coral spawning events (November–December), whale shark sightings and fewer crowds. Afternoon storms possible. Excellent value and availability during this period.

Before You Go

Practical Travel Information

Departure Times

Most full-day reef tours depart from Cairns Marina between 7:30 am and 8:30 am, returning by 5:30–6:00 pm. Half-day tours depart at noon (afternoon) or 8:00 am (morning), giving you flexibility to combine with another activity. Cruise ship visitors should note 3 daily departure windows on select tours.

What to Bring

Pack swimmers (worn under clothes), a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, light jacket for the boat ride, and any personal medication. Leave valuables at your hotel — secure storage is limited. A small waterproof camera or GoPro is highly recommended. Most operators have underwater cameras for hire.

Marine Park Rules

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park has strict environmental protection rules. Do not touch, stand on or collect any coral or marine life. Use only reef-safe mineral sunscreen. Do not feed fish. Stay within guide-marked snorkel zones. These rules exist to protect the reef for future generations — all operators take compliance seriously.

Families & Children

Most reef tours are family-friendly from age 4+, with snorkelling recommended from age 6. Reef pontoons with enclosed children's swimming areas are ideal for young families. Introductory scuba diving is available from age 12. Children's rates apply on most tours — ask about family pricing packages when booking.

Sea Conditions & Safety

Outer reef sites are generally calm with minimal current. Stinger suits (lycra) are provided year-round and are strongly recommended November–May when marine stingers are present in reef waters. All operators carry onboard medics, oxygen and first aid equipment. Tours may be modified or cancelled in severe weather with full refunds offered.

Booking & Cancellation

Book online 24/7 or call 07 4041 3244 (Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm AEST). Free cancellation is available up to 48 hours before departure on most tours. Peak season (June–September) books out weeks in advance — we recommend booking at least 5–7 days ahead. Early bird discounts of up to 15% available on selected dates.

Common Questions

Great Barrier Reef Tours
FAQ

Most full-day Great Barrier Reef tours from Cairns run 8–9 hours total, including the 90-minute catamaran journey each way. You'll spend approximately 4–5 hours at the outer reef sites for snorkelling, diving and other marine activities. Half-day tours (4–5 hours total) are available for visitors with limited time, including three daily departures designed specifically for cruise ship passengers.
Basic swimming ability is recommended for snorkelling, but all operators provide buoyancy vests and full-length wetsuits that help you float naturally in the water. Guided snorkel tours stay in calm, shallow areas. Non-swimmers can still fully experience the reef via glass-bottom boat tours, semi-submersible vessels and underwater observatories — you don't need to enter the water at all to witness stunning reef life.
The dry season (May–October) delivers the best overall conditions — calm seas, 20–30 metre water visibility, comfortable temperatures and reliable weather. June and July offer the unique chance to swim with dwarf minke whales on liveaboard trips (the only place in the world to do this). July–September is humpback whale season. The wet season (November–April) brings warmer water, dramatic coral spawning and fewer crowds, with excellent value on accommodation and tours.
Yes — all visitors to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park are strongly encouraged to use reef-safe, mineral-based sunscreen free from oxybenzone and octinoxate, chemicals that cause coral bleaching. Many tour operators sell reef-safe sunscreen onboard and some require it as a condition of entry to the water. A full-length wetsuit or stinger suit provides excellent UV protection and reduces sunscreen use altogether.
Many reef pontoons and larger catamaran vessels are wheelchair accessible, with ramps, accessible bathrooms and viewing platforms. The Sunlover Moore Reef pontoon and Great Adventures reef platform both have good accessibility. Contact operators directly to discuss specific needs — most are experienced in accommodating guests with mobility challenges and can arrange adaptive snorkelling equipment.
Essential items: swimmers worn under your clothes, towel, reef-safe mineral sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, light jacket for the boat ride (can be cool at speed even in summer), any personal medication, and a waterproof camera or GoPro. Leave valuables, jewellery and large bags at your hotel. Most operators have lockers or secure storage, but space is limited. Underwater cameras and GoPros are available to hire onboard.
