The Gold Coast's Hidden Treasure

Ancient Forests,
Mountain Magic

Rising dramatically behind the Gold Coast's famous beaches, the hinterland is one of Australia's most extraordinary natural regions — and one of its most undervisited. While 13 million tourists arrive on the Gold Coast each year, only a fraction make it up into the mountains that tower above Surfers Paradise and create the region's most spectacular scenery.

The Gold Coast Hinterland encompasses Springbrook, Lamington, Mount Barney, and Mount Warning National Parks — together forming part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, a UNESCO World Heritage Area protecting some of the rarest ecosystems on Earth. These subtropical and warm temperate rainforests are remnants of the vegetation that once blanketed the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana more than 23 million years ago. Species found here exist nowhere else on the planet.

From the volcanic peaks of Mount Warning/Wollumbin — which catches the first mainland sunrise in Australia every morning — to the magical glow worm cave at Natural Bridge, the hinterland rewards visitors with experiences that are genuinely irreplaceable. Cooee Tours' guided packages take you deep into the best of it, with expert nature guides, comfortable transport, and curated itineraries designed to show you why the hinterland is every bit as extraordinary as the beach below it.

The summit walk (4.4km return, moderate to challenging) rewards with 360° views and the distinction of receiving Australia's first mainland sunrise each morning. A deeply sacred Bundjalung site deserving respectful visitation.

Natural Bridge glow worm cave Gold Coast hinterland Springbrook Must See Within Springbrook

Natural Bridge — Glow Worm Cave

One of the hinterland's most extraordinary experiences — a basalt arch formed by the collapse of a cave roof, creating a natural bridge over a waterfall that pours into a living glow worm grotto below. Thousands of Arachnocampa flava glow worms line the cave ceiling, creating a natural bioluminescent galaxy. Night tours offer the most dramatic viewing.

Planning Your Visit

Essential Hinterland
Visitor Information

Getting There

45–90 minutes from Gold Coast accommodation depending on destination. Cooee Tours includes return transport from a central Gold Coast meeting point on all packages. Car rental is recommended for independent exploration — GPS essential on mountain roads.

Weather & Climate

5–10°C cooler than the coast year-round. Winter (June–August) is crisp and clear — best for views and hiking. Summer brings lush growth and spectacular waterfalls but can be wet. Pack layers and a rain jacket regardless of season.

What to Wear

Comfortable walking shoes with good grip are essential — many forest tracks have exposed roots and uneven surfaces. Bring layers, a waterproof jacket, hat, and reef-safe sunscreen. Long pants for hiking. Swimwear for natural pools in summer.

Communications

Mobile coverage is patchy in many hinterland areas — some valleys have no signal at all. Download maps offline before departing. All Cooee Tours guides carry emergency communication devices. Let someone know your plans if hiking independently.

Accommodation

Mountain retreats, eco-lodges, B&Bs and camping available throughout the hinterland. O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat and Binna Burra Lodge are iconic overnight options. Most visitors do day trips from Gold Coast or Brisbane accommodation.

Safety & Conservation

Stay on marked trails at all times — these World Heritage ecosystems are irreplaceable. Carry water and snacks. Weather changes rapidly at elevation. Be aware of steep drops at lookouts and slippery surfaces near waterfalls. Respect cultural significance at Bundjalung sacred sites.
