☀️ NZ UV is World-Leading
New Zealand has some of the planet's highest UV levels — higher than similar latitudes elsewhere due to ozone thinning. SPF 50+ is non-negotiable, even on overcast days.
🦟 Sandflies Are Relentless
NZ sandflies (ngārara) are far worse than Australian mozzies — especially on the West Coast, Fiordland, and Abel Tasman. DEET-based repellent is your single most important packing item.
🌊 Many Beaches Are Unpatrolled
Unlike Australia, most NZ beaches have no lifeguard patrols. Only swim at patrolled beaches (red/yellow flags) and always check local conditions. Rips and surf can be strong.

📋 Book DOC Huts Early
Great Walk huts must be booked in advance at booking.doc.govt.nz. Peak season (Dec–Feb) books out months ahead. Carry your hut pass confirmation — wardens check it nightly.
🌧️ Weather Changes in Minutes
NZ mountain weather is famously unpredictable. The Fiordland and West Coast receive up to 8 metres of rain per year. A full waterproof system is non-negotiable on any Great Walk.
🦟 Sandflies in the Bush
Sandflies are worst at dusk and dawn near rivers and Fiordland huts. DEET repellent, long sleeves, and head nets make a huge difference. Many huts sell repellent — but pay a premium.

💳 NZ Transport Cards
Each city has its own card. AT HOP in Auckland, Bee Card in Wellington, Metro Card in Christchurch. Get one before you arrive — cash fares cost 50% more.
🌦️ Wellington Weather
Wellington is nicknamed "Windy Welly" for good reason. Pack a compact umbrella and a wind-resistant jacket even in summer — the capital is famous for four seasons in one day.
🚗 Queenstown Has No Usable PT
Unlike Auckland and Wellington, Queenstown has almost no public transport. Hire a car, use Uber, or stay central and walk. Factor this into your accommodation and transport budget.

⛷️ NZ Ski Season: June – October
Queenstown's Coronet Peak & The Remarkables, Wānaka's Cardrona & Treble Cone, and Mt Hutt near Christchurch are the main resorts. Book lift passes and accommodation 4–8 weeks ahead in July–August.
🧊 The Three-Layer System
Base layer (merino wool is perfect — and NZ has the world's best), mid-layer fleece, waterproof shell. Avoid cotton at all times — it retains moisture and chills you rapidly in mountain conditions.
🎿 Hire Gear On-Mountain
Unless you ski regularly, hiring skis, boots, helmet and poles at the resort is more practical than bringing your own. Pre-book hire online — cheaper and guaranteed availability at peak times.

⚖️ Pack Light for NZ
Aim for under 10kg total. You'll move regularly — hostels, campervans, Great Walk huts — and store bags in lockers. Merino wool clothing resists odour so you can pack fewer items.
🔐 Padlock Everything
A 40mm combination padlock is essential for YHA and hostel lockers. Bring two — one for your locker and one to secure your bag when using transport.
🛒 Countdown & New World
Countdown (Woolworths NZ) and New World supermarkets are your budget best friends. Self-catering in hostel kitchens can cut food costs by 50–60%. Pack a lightweight reusable shopping bag.
