Historic homesteads, award-winning cellar doors, an alpaca farm in a vineyard, and the stories behind one of Queensland’s most quietly remarkable wine regions — all within an hour of the Gold Coast.
Most visitors come to the Gold Coast for its beaches and theme parks. But 30 to 45 minutes inland, tucked into the volcanic folds of the Scenic Rim hinterland, lies one of Queensland’s most characterful and rapidly growing boutique wine regions. Heritage homesteads, sweeping mountain views, cellar doors in 160-year-old colonial buildings, an alpaca farm in the middle of a vineyard, and award-winning wines made from subtropical varieties that you won’t find in the Barossa or the Hunter — this is the Hinterland Heritage Wine Tour.
The cooler inland micro-climates of Tamborine Mountain, the Canungra Valley, and the Albert River corridor create ideal conditions for Verdelho, Chambourcin, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and some of Australia’s most unusual fruit wines. The tour is a full-day experience combining wine history, colonial architecture, and spectacular scenery in one easy guided package — with a designated driver, so everyone can enjoy the tastings.

The Hinterland Heritage Wine Tour is a full-day guided experience departing at 8:30am and visiting four distinctive wineries across the Gold Coast hinterland, each with its own character, history, and wine style. Tastings are included at each stop, a provided lunch is served mid-tour, and a designated driver ensures everyone can indulge in the tastings without concern.
The tour operates with a maximum of 24 guests — large enough to be social, small enough to ensure personal attention at each cellar door. Tours typically rotate between six possible stops, so the exact itinerary varies by day; the experience always includes three wineries and often a distillery. Most travellers book approximately 35 days in advance — weekend dates and June (Scenic Rim Eat Local Month) fill fastest.
The Gold Coast hinterland wine region encompasses Tamborine Mountain, the Canungra Valley, and the Albert River corridor — three distinct micro-climates within 30–60 minutes of the Gold Coast, each producing wines with a character distinct from anything you’d find in the southern Australian wine regions.
Situated on the bank of the Albert River, Albert River Wines is housed in a stunning historic colonial homestead and iconic Queenslander building with sweeping views of Tamborine Mountain and the hinterland. The cellar door is open daily and offers tastings across their full range of boutique wines. One of the most architecturally distinctive stops on the tour — the heritage buildings provide a glimpse into Queensland’s colonial past that most visitors to the Gold Coast never see.
The centrepiece of the tour for many guests — a multi award-winning 15-acre vineyard established in 1998 by the O’Reilly family, set in front of the Killowen homestead, originally built in Warwick in 1858 and relocated to this site in 1989. The vines were planted by over 150 locals and the first harvest came in March 2000. Adjacent to the vineyard is Mountview Alpaca Farm — 50 resident alpacas that provide an extraordinary and genuinely unusual addition to a cellar door visit. Picnic hampers can be arranged beside the creek.
Named after the national park next door — Witches Falls was Queensland’s first declared national park in 1908 — Witches Falls Winery has built a reputation well beyond its hinterland setting through consistent recognition on the National Wine Show Circuit. Seven-days-a-week tastings, scenic mountain surrounds, and wines that genuinely surprise visitors who arrive expecting Gold Coast novelty and leave with something worth adding to the cellar.
Nestled at the base of Lamington National Park, just 10 minutes from the township of Canungra, Sarabah Estate is one of the most beautifully situated cellar doors in South East Queensland. The picturesque vineyard has a cellar door, bistro, and bar — making it an ideal lunch stop or late afternoon wind-down. The World Heritage-listed national park rises dramatically behind the vines, and the bistro produces food that genuinely complements the wines on offer.
The Gibson family has been connected to this land since the 1850s, and their winery reflects that depth of local history. Mount Nathan is best known for its extraordinary honey wine — a uniquely regional product that consistently draws superlatives from visitors who try it for the first time. The scenic Gold Coast views from the property and the warmth of the family-owned atmosphere make it one of the most memorable stops on the full tour circuit.
Often the final stop on a guided tour day, Tamborine Mountain Distillery is a revelation for visitors who arrive expecting a simple spirits tasting. Over 90 gins, liqueurs, and spirits are available — many served in individual test tubes for tasting, which makes the selection process genuinely exciting. The building is distinctive and atmospheric, the staff are knowledgeable and engaging, and the range of botanical-forward Australian gins is outstanding.
The Gold Coast hinterland is not the Barossa. You won’t find powerful full-bodied Shiraz or the classic cool-climate Pinot Noir here — and that is entirely the point. The region’s subtropical climate and cooler inland elevations create conditions suited to varieties rarely grown elsewhere in Queensland: Verdelho (producing fresh, citrus-driven whites that suit the warm climate perfectly), Chambourcin (a French hybrid red that thrives in humid conditions and produces deeply coloured, earthy wines), Semillon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec.
The fruit wine tradition is equally distinctive. Mount Nathan’s honey wine is the most famous example — but blueberry wines, mango wines, and other subtropical fruit-based wines appear across the region’s cellar doors. These are not novelties; they are wines with genuine character that reflect the landscape they come from in a way that imported French varieties simply cannot.
