K'gari (Fraser Island) is unlike anywhere else on Earth — a World Heritage sand island with ancient rainforest growing on sand, over 100 freshwater lakes, pure dingoes, 75 Mile Beach and the Maheno Shipwreck. Paired with Hervey Bay's extraordinary whale nursery, the Fraser Coast is one of Queensland's most underrated destinations.
K'gari means "paradise" in the language of the Butchulla people, the Traditional Custodians of this island for over 5,500 years. It is a deeply fitting name. The world's largest sand island somehow supports ancient subtropical rainforest, crystal-clear perched lakes of extraordinary blue, coloured sand cliffs up to 200 metres high and a 75-mile ocean beach that doubles as a highway.
K'gari sits just offshore from Hervey Bay — one of the few places in the world where humpback whales rest and play with their calves, sheltered by the island's western coast. The Great Sandy Straits between Hervey Bay and K'gari is a protected marine park with dugongs, dolphins, sea turtles and extraordinary birdlife. Together, they form one of the most biologically rich destinations in Queensland.
Every operator here is independently owned, eco-certified and based in Hervey Bay or on the island. From custom panoramic 4WD coaches to intimate 4-passenger Landrover expeditions and Butchulla cultural experiences — the choice suits every style of traveller.
The most popular eco-certified K'gari day tour from Hervey Bay — daily departures in a custom 4WD cruiser with panoramic windows and expert local guide commentary. Full day visiting Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek, the Maheno Shipwreck, Pinnacles coloured sands, Pile Valley ancient rainforest and 75 Mile Beach. Return ferry transfers, buffet lunch at K'gari Beach Resort and National Park fees all included. Departs River Heads 8:30am, returns ~6pm.
Australian family-owned for over 25 years and eco-certified — Fraser Experience operates the most intimate K'gari tour available: maximum 4 passengers on comfortable Landrovers, so your guide is effectively private. Three decades of local knowledge from guides who know every dingo trail and hidden lake. Also offers the exclusive 'K'gari Exclusive' tour for discerning travellers who want the island entirely on their own terms. Departing Hervey Bay.
Tasman Venture does something genuinely different: instead of the standard east coast 4WD tour, they cross from Hervey Bay to K'gari's largely unvisited west coast by catamaran. Awinya Creek's coloured sands, sand dune climbs with 360° views, freshwater swimming holes and snorkelling from the island's pristine western shores. A K'gari experience that most visitors never see. Also offers a combined K'gari and whale watching tour (Jul–Oct) with the option to swim with whales.
The only Indigenous-focused marine experience in Hervey Bay — a family-owned ecotour company that centres Butchulla cultural knowledge in every journey. Their glass-bottomed boat Milbi (named for the sea turtle in Butchulla language) carries guests through the Great Sandy Straits with Dreamtime stories delivered directly by Butchulla people. Wheelchair and pram accessible. Profits subsidise school excursions to the island. A deeply meaningful alternative to conventional tours.
The only eco-resort on K'gari — staying here puts you on the island with guided 4WD ranger tours departing daily and the all-new Illumina light show, an immersive nighttime walk through the rainforest with projection mapping and Butchulla story-telling built into the experience. The ideal base for multi-day K'gari exploration. Accessible by passenger ferry from River Heads, Hervey Bay. Also bookable as a day trip with ferry + guided tour package.
Australia's first commercial whale watching company — Hervey Bay has been operating tours since 1987. Humpback whales rest in the calm protected waters of Platypus Bay (sheltered by K'gari) on their southbound migration with new calves from July through November. The bay's calm conditions and the whales' resting behaviour means remarkably long, intimate encounters — calves often approach the vessel curiously while mothers rest below. Multiple operators run daily; Spirit of Hervey Bay is among the longest-established.
A perched freshwater lake of extraordinary clarity — white silica sand base, soft aquamarine water, entirely fed by rainwater. No fish, no algae, no impurities. Swimming here is an otherworldly experience. One of the most photographed lakes in Australia.
Four million litres of fresh water flow into the Pacific every hour — walk upstream and let the current carry you back through pandanus palms and ancient sand dunes to the beach. One of the most popular and easily accessible experiences on the island.
The rusted hull of the passenger liner Maheno — washed ashore during a cyclone in 1935 while being towed to Japan for scrapping. One of K'gari's most iconic images, slowly dissolving back into the sand over decades.
Multicoloured sand cliffs of burnt orange, ochre, deep red and cream — formed over thousands of years as wind and rain sculpted the island's ancient dunes. Up to 200 metres high. The colours intensify in late afternoon light.
Ancient satinay trees towering over 40 metres growing directly out of sand — one of the world's only examples of subtropical rainforest on a sand island. Central Station at the heart of Pile Valley was once a thriving logging community. Now silent, magnificent and deeply peaceful.
K'gari is home to one of Australia's last populations of pure dingoes, uncontaminated by cross-breeding with domestic dogs. Cream, sandy and ginger coloured, they roam the beaches and forest edges freely. All visitors follow Dingo Safe guidelines — keep distance, never feed. Sightings on 75 Mile Beach are common.
Hervey Bay holds a special place among the world's whale watching destinations. When humpback whales complete their northward migration to calve and mate, they begin the southbound journey from July onwards — and many stop in the calm, shallow waters of Platypus Bay, sheltered by K'gari's western coast, to rest with their new calves.
These are not brief sightings. Because the whales are resting rather than migrating, encounters in Hervey Bay are typically long — 30 minutes to over an hour with the same pod. Calves are playful and curious, often approaching vessels. Australia's first commercial whale watching operator started here in 1987, and the season has only grown richer since.
"K'gari Explorer Tours gave us the perfect day — Lake McKenzie was genuinely other-worldly, Eli Creek was so much fun the kids didn't want to leave, and seeing a dingo trotting along 75 Mile Beach in the late afternoon light was something I'll never forget. The guide's knowledge was remarkable."
"Tasman Venture's west coast tour was extraordinary — we had K'gari's western shores entirely to ourselves, swam in freshwater holes in the dunes, climbed a sand mountain for a 360° view of the island. Nothing like the usual tour. And the whale watching combo on the way back sealed it as one of the best days I've ever had in Australia."
"The Hervey Bay Eco Marine Tours experience with the Butchulla guides was deeply moving — understanding this place through its Traditional Custodians rather than just as a tourist attraction completely changed how I saw everything else on the trip. Milbi the glass-bottomed boat was brilliant for spotting turtles and rays. This tour should be on every Fraser Coast itinerary."
