Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) is one of Fraser Island's most spectacular natural attractions and the jewel in the crown of our eco-tour. This stunning perched lake sits 100 meters above sea level and is fed entirely by rainwater, resulting in water so pure you can drink it straight from the lake. The lake's incredible clarity and vivid blue color come from its unique composition - pure white silica sand acts as a natural filter, creating water of exceptional purity.
The beach surrounding Lake McKenzie features some of the finest, whitest sand in the world. This ultra-fine silica sand is so pure that it was once used to polish jewelry and metal. Swimming in Lake McKenzie is an unforgettable experience - the soft sand exfoliates your skin naturally while the fresh water is refreshingly cool and crystal clear, offering visibility of up to 30 meters.
Our eco-conscious approach ensures we visit during optimal times to minimize environmental impact while maximizing your experience. We educate all guests on the lake's delicate ecosystem and the importance of preserving this natural wonder for future generations.
Experience the thrill of driving along 75 Mile Beach, one of the world's most remarkable natural highways. This expansive stretch of golden sand serves as both a beach and an officially designated highway, creating an adventure unlike any other. As we cruise along the beach in our comfortable 4WD vehicles, you'll witness the raw power of the Pacific Ocean crashing against the shore while enjoying panoramic views that stretch as far as the eye can see.
The beach is home to several iconic Fraser Island landmarks, including the haunting Maheno Shipwreck. This 1905 luxury passenger liner ran aground in 1935 during a cyclone and has since become one of Australia's most photographed shipwrecks. The rusting hull creates a striking contrast against the pristine sand and blue ocean, offering incredible photography opportunities while serving as a powerful reminder of nature's force.
Along the beach, we'll also visit the Pinnacles - spectacular colored sand cliffs formed over thousands of years through natural weathering. These towering cliffs showcase vibrant bands of ochre, yellow, red, and brown, each layer telling a story of the island's geological history. Our knowledgeable guides will explain the fascinating processes that created these natural wonders while ensuring we follow strict conservation guidelines to protect these fragile formations.
One of Fraser Island's most remarkable ecological phenomena is its ancient rainforests growing directly on sand - a feat found nowhere else on Earth. These unique forests thrive despite the absence of traditional soil, thanks to the island's complex nutrient cycling system developed over hundreds of thousands of years. Walking through these towering forests feels like stepping back in time, with massive satinay and brush box trees reaching heights of over 50 meters.
Our guided rainforest walks take you through pristine wilderness areas where you'll discover an incredible diversity of plant species, including ancient king ferns, towering kauri pines, and the distinctive piccabeen palms. The forest floor is carpeted with thick moss and adorned with vibrant fungi, creating a lush green wonderland that contrasts dramatically with the sandy beaches just meters away. Listen to the melodious calls of over 350 bird species that call these forests home, from the distinctive laugh of the kookaburra to the sweet songs of various honeyeaters.
As a certified eco-tour operator, we ensure our forest walks follow designated trails to minimize impact on the delicate ecosystem. Our expert guides share their deep knowledge of the island's ecology, indigenous history, and conservation efforts, helping you understand and appreciate the complex web of life that makes Fraser Island so special. This is education through experience - sustainable tourism at its finest.

Our expert guides will introduce you to the fascinating nutrient cycling process, show you various plant species with traditional uses, and help you spot wildlife including goannas, echidnas, and numerous bird species.

The water is so clear and fresh it was historically used to supply ships, and swimming in Eli Creek is one of Fraser Island's most refreshing and memorable experiences.
Marvel at the spectacular Pinnacles, towering colored sand cliffs that showcase nature's artistry over thousands of years. These formations display up to 72 different sand colors in bands of ochre, yellow, red, brown, and cream, each layer representing different periods of the island's geological history. The colors change throughout the day as light hits the cliffs from different angles, creating an ever-changing natural canvas. Learn about the natural processes of erosion, oxidation, and mineral presence that created these stunning formations.
Fraser Island is home to an incredible array of wildlife, and our expert guides know exactly where and when to look for the island's inhabitants. Watch for wallabies grazing in forest clearings, observe goannas sunbaking on the sand, and keep your eyes skyward for brahminy kites, sea eagles, and over 350 species of birds that inhabit the island.

We've answered the most common questions about our Fraser Island eco-tours below. If you have additional questions, our friendly team is always happy to help - just give us a call or send an email.
To ensure you have the best possible experience on your Fraser Island eco-tour, proper preparation is key. The island's environment can be intense, with strong sun, sandy conditions, and varying temperatures throughout the day. Here are our expert recommendations to help you make the most of your adventure.
Sun Protection: Queensland sun is intense, and the island's reflective sand amplifies UV exposure. Bring and regularly apply SPF 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen (reef-safe formulations preferred to protect lake ecosystems), wear a wide-brimmed hat, quality sunglasses with UV protection, and consider long-sleeved UV protective clothing. Even on cloudy days, UV levels remain high.
Footwear Choices: Sand will be everywhere! Bring comfortable walking shoes or sandals with good grip for forest walks, but also consider water shoes or old sneakers for beach walking as the sand can be hot and shells sharp. Thongs (flip-flops) are perfect for lake swimming but not ideal for extended walking.
Photography Tips: Fraser Island offers incredible photo opportunities. Bring a camera or ensure your phone is fully charged. Consider a waterproof case for shots in and around the water. The best light for photography is early morning and late afternoon when the sun creates stunning colors on the sand formations and lakes. Your guide will help you capture the perfect shots at each location.
What to Leave Behind: Avoid bringing valuable jewelry or items you'd be upset about getting sandy or wet. Leave drones at home - they're not permitted on Fraser Island without special permits. Single-use plastics are discouraged as part of our eco-commitment. Remember, you'll be in a pristine natural environment, so less is more.
Fraser Island, traditionally known as K'gari, holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Butchulla people, who have been the traditional custodians of this land for thousands of years. Understanding and respecting this rich cultural heritage is an important part of our eco-tourism approach.
According to Butchulla tradition, K'gari means "paradise," and the island's creation story is a beautiful testament to the deep spiritual connection between the people and their land. The story tells of Beiral, the god who created the land and sea, and his messenger K'gari, a beautiful spirit who helped create the landscape. After creating the mainland, K'gari was so captivated by the beauty of the area that she asked to remain. Beiral transformed her into the island, with her eyes becoming the beautiful lakes, her hair the forests, and her body the sand that forms this magnificent place.
The Butchulla people lived sustainably on K'gari for thousands of years before European settlement, developing intimate knowledge of the island's resources, seasons, and ecology. They had sophisticated management practices for the land, including controlled burning to encourage new growth and manage wildlife populations. Many of the locations we visit on our tour, including Lake Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie) and Wanggoolba Creek, have traditional names and significance that our guides share with respect and acknowledgment.
Today, Cooee Tours works in partnership with the Butchulla people to ensure our tourism practices respect their cultural heritage and support their ongoing connection to Country. A portion of every tour booking goes toward supporting Butchulla cultural programs and land management initiatives. We believe that understanding the cultural significance of K'gari enhances every visitor's experience and contributes to preserving this living culture for future generations.
In August 2021, the Queensland Government officially restored the dual name "K'gari (Fraser Island)" in recognition of the island's traditional heritage. We're proud to honor and use both names, acknowledging that this paradise has been K'gari long before it was known as Fraser Island, and will continue to be a place of profound significance for the Butchulla people.
