Brisbane is one of the most under-rated wine bases in Australia. Within 2.5 hours of the CBD there are three distinct wine regions, more than 80 licensed cellar doors, and some of the most interesting alternative-variety winemaking happening anywhere in the country. Here's the honest, complete map of what's worth your time.
Mount Tamborine Wineries (~60 min from Brisbane)
Mount Tamborine sits 525 metres above sea level in the McPherson Ranges — a 60-minute drive from Brisbane CBD that feels nothing like the trip there. The volcanic basalt soils and elevated position create conditions suited to aromatic whites and structured reds. Wineries here are small, boutique, and deeply personal — in most cases you'll be tasting with the winemaker or their family.
The original Tamborine winery and arguably still the best. The creek-side setting, resident peacocks, and single-vineyard Chardonnay make it the most complete cellar door experience on the mountain.
Best cellar door view on the mountain. Their sparkling rosé is a consistent Queensland wine trophy winner. The tasting room deck overlooks the full valley — hard to leave.
The full list of Mount Tamborine cellar doors, what to taste, and how to get there without driving is covered in our dedicated Mount Tamborine wine guide.
Scenic Rim Wineries (~75 min from Brisbane)
The Scenic Rim stretches across the valleys and ranges between Beaudesert and Boonah. Unlike the intimate boutique cellars of Tamborine, the Scenic Rim is estate-scale winery territory — large cellar doors with dedicated restaurants, event spaces, and accommodation. The most famous is Sirromet, which regularly wins national awards and has arguably the best winery restaurant in Queensland.
Queensland's most awarded winery. The Lurleen's Restaurant is exceptional, the lawn is spectacular, and the cellar door tastings are among the most polished in the state. Perfect for groups.
Connected to the legendary O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat, this boutique estate produces wines of real elegance. The Pinot Noir captures the valley's cool terroir — lighter and more perfumed than you'd expect from Queensland.
Granite Belt Wineries (~2.5 hrs from Brisbane)
Queensland's most serious wine region and its most under-visited. Over 60 cellar doors operate near Stanthorpe at elevations of 800–1,000 metres, producing cool-climate wines that comfortably outperform their reputation. The "Strange Birds" movement here champions Italian and Iberian varieties that no other Australian region grows at scale.
Key estates: Ballandean (Queensland's oldest winery, est. 1970), Ridgemill (Strange Birds leader, exceptional Fiano and Tempranillo), Golden Grove (Italian variety specialists), Summit Estate (best views in the region). Full details in our Granite Belt wine tour guide.

How to Visit Without Driving
The obvious problem with visiting Queensland wineries from Brisbane is the drive — you can't drink if you're behind the wheel, and tasting across 3–4 cellar doors before driving home is not a strategy. The practical solutions are a dedicated driver in your group, or a guided wine tour.
Guided tours remove all the logistics: pick-up from Brisbane, pre-reserved cellar door spots, knowledgeable guide, food included, and safe return to the city. Cooee Tours covers all three regions from Brisbane, with tours from $89 per person for a Mount Tamborine half-day through to $185 for a full Granite Belt extended day. See the full tour guide for options and pricing.
Weekend cellar doors near Brisbane are busy — shorter pours, less winemaker time, less personal attention. A Tuesday or Wednesday visit to Tamborine or the Granite Belt is a completely different experience, especially at smaller producers like Mason Wines or Ridgemill.
