From Mirror-Still Rivers to Open Ocean Reefs
The Sunshine Coast's 100 kilometres of coastline is only the beginning. Behind the beaches lies an entire network of rivers, lakes, and one of the world's rarest aquatic ecosystems β the Noosa Everglades, one of just two everglades systems on Earth. Offshore, the scuttled HMAS Brisbane sits on the sea floor just 15 minutes from Mooloolaba, now home to over 350 species of marine life and consistently rated among the world's best wreck dives.
Whether you're after the adrenaline of jet skiing through Pumicestone Passage, the meditative calm of paddling the "River of Mirrors" at dawn, the thrill of catching your first wave at Noosa, or the once-in-a-lifetime experience of sliding into the water alongside a humpback whale β the Sunshine Coast delivers water experiences you won't find anywhere else in Australia.
From beginner-friendly SUP hire on the Maroochy River to PADI-certified wreck diving and multi-day kayak expeditions through the Great Sandy National Park, there's a water activity here for every age, skill level, and sense of adventure.
Noosa Everglades β The River of Mirrors
One of only two everglades systems on Earth β and the only one where it's safe to swim. The upper Noosa River winds through the Great Sandy National Park in mirror-still waterways surrounded by untouched paperbark forests, ancient wetlands, and abundant birdlife. It has remained essentially unchanged for thousands of years and sits within the Noosa UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Operators like Kanu Kapers and Everglades Eco Safaris run guided and self-guided kayak tours ranging from half-day paddles to multi-day overnight expeditions with riverside camping. Guided tours include locally handcrafted expedition sea kayaks, morning tea, lunch, and expert commentary. Self-guided options provide maps, navigation briefings, and all equipment β you set your own pace through the wilderness.

Wreck Dive the Ex-HMAS Brisbane & Coral Reefs
The Ex-HMAS Brisbane is a 133-metre guided-missile destroyer scuttled in 2005 just 2.9 nautical miles off Mooloolaba β a 15-minute boat ride. Now a thriving marine conservation park, the wreck sits upright with its forward decks at 15 metres and is home to turtles, bull rays, eagle rays, giant Queensland grouper, lionfish, nudibranchs, and enormous schools of kingfish. Tropical Cyclone Alfred in 2025 dramatically moved the forward smoke stack β creating an entirely new dive experience.
Sunreef Mooloolaba is a PADI 5-Star Instructor Development Centre operating for over 35 years from The Wharf. Beyond the HMAS Brisbane, they dive stunning local reefs, Flinders Reef (Queensland's highest coral diversity for a subtropical reef), and offer snorkelling trips to Mudjimba Island (Old Woman Island) where you'll find dolphins, turtles, stingrays, and vibrant coral just 3β5 metres below the surface.
Ex-HMAS Brisbane β world-class wreck, daily trips, double dive. Local Reefs β Hanging Rock, Mudjimba Island. Flinders Reef β highest subtropical coral diversity in QLD. Grey Nurse Shark dive β Queensland's most accessible.

Free land-based viewing is also spectacular from Point Cartwright, Moffat Headland, and the Noosa National Park coastal track.
For the ultimate encounter, Sunreef Mooloolaba was Australia's first operator to offer a swim-with-humpback-whales experience (launched 2014). Small groups slide into the water with a guide and safety line while whales approach on their own terms β often gliding directly past for an unforgettable eye-to-eye encounter. Cotton Tree is one of the most popular SUP launch points on the Coast, with flat water protected between the river and the ocean.
Further south, Pumicestone Passage between Caloundra and Bribie Island provides 35 kilometres of sheltered waterway with views to the Glass House Mountains β perfect for SUP, kayaking, and eco-tours.
