Waitomo
Glowworm Caves

Drift beneath a living constellation of thousands of bioluminescent glowworms in New Zealand's most magical underground world.

A Natural Wonder

Nature's Underground Galaxy

Hidden beneath the rolling hills of New Zealand's North Island, the Waitomo Caves harbour one of Earth's most extraordinary spectacles — millions of tiny glowworms transforming ancient limestone grottos into a living, breathing constellation.

Iconic Experience

Glowworm Grottos

Marvel at thousands of Arachnocampa luminosa glowworms — a species unique to New Zealand and Australia — as they create a shimmering blue-green display across cave ceilings. Each larva spins up to 70 sticky silk threads to catch prey, producing light through a chemical reaction called bioluminescence. The effect is nothing short of otherworldly.

🚣
Signature Tour

Underground Boat Ride

Climb silently into a flat-bottomed boat and let your guide navigate the underground river using only a single rope — no oars, no engine. In the near-total darkness, the only sound is the soft pull of water and your own breath. Above you, thousands of glowworms create a ceiling of cold blue fire. This 20-minute journey is the centrepiece of any Waitomo visit.

🏔️
Geology

30-Million-Year-Old Limestone

The caves were formed when ancient sea creatures died, compressed, and slowly transformed into limestone over 30 million years. Water drilled through cracks, gradually dissolving the rock into the labyrinthine chambers and passages we explore today. The result: stunning stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, and helictites frozen in mid-growth.

🌊
Acoustic Marvel

The Cathedral Cave

Soaring 18 metres from floor to ceiling, the Cathedral is Waitomo's most dramatic chamber. The acoustics are so extraordinary that world-famous opera singers and choirs have performed here to sell-out audiences seated underground. Even in silence, it commands reverence. Stand still for a moment and feel the scale of geological time around you.

🧗
Adventure

Black Water Rafting

For those who want more than a gentle boat ride, Waitomo's black water rafting plunges you into the experience. Suited up in a wetsuit and helmet, you'll float on an inner tube through subterranean rivers, leap off underground waterfalls, and gaze up at glowworms from water level — a completely different and exhilarating perspective.

🔦
Walking Tour

Ruakuri Cave

New Zealand's longest guided underground walking experience takes you 1.6 km through a spiral passageway descending gently into the earth. Along the way: roaring underground waterfalls, caverns dripping with formations, and glowworm colonies so dense the ceiling seems to move. The purpose-built spiral ramp makes this tour fully wheelchair accessible.

Why Waitomo?

What Makes Waitomo So Special?

A confluence of geology, biology, and silence that exists almost nowhere else on Earth.

🐛

An Endemic Species

Arachnocampa luminosa is found only in New Zealand and Australia. These are not fireflies — they're the larvae of a fungus gnat, and they spend most of their 6–12-month larval stage in near-total darkness, creating light to lure prey into their silk-thread traps. Waitomo hosts some of the highest concentrations anywhere in the world.

🌌

A Living Light Show

The glow comes from a chemical reaction between luciferin and oxygen — a process so efficient it produces almost no heat. Each glowworm modulates its brightness based on hunger: the hungrier the larva, the brighter it glows. When conditions are right, the cave ceiling shimmers like the Milky Way seen from a remote desert.

🤫

The Rule of Silence

During the famous boat ride, guides ask for complete quiet. Noise and vibration cause the glowworms to retract their silk threads and dim their lights — an instinctive defensive response. In practice, this means that the more still and silent your group is, the more spectacular the display. Silence becomes its own reward.

🏛️

Māori Heritage

The name Waitomo comes from the Māori words wai (water) and tomo (pit or shaft). The caves hold deep cultural significance for the local Tainui people. Local Māori chief Tane Tinorau first explored the caves by candle-lit raft in 1887 alongside surveyor Fred Mace — and the Tainui people remain deeply connected to their stewardship today.
