Why Stanthorpe?

Queensland's Best-Kept Wine Secret

While most of Australia's acclaimed wine regions sit in cooler southern states, Queensland quietly produces some of the country's most distinctive cool-climate wines — and Stanthorpe is where it all happens. Sitting at over 800 metres above sea level in the Southern Downs, the Granite Belt experiences four genuine seasons: spring frosts, warm summers perfect for berry picking, autumn harvests carpeted in gold and burnt orange, and winters cold enough to occasionally dust the vines with snow.

With over 50 boutique wineries and 38 cellar doors within a short drive of Stanthorpe township, the region offers something rare — genuine small-producer hospitality where you're as likely to meet the actual winemaker as you are their assistant. Our guided weekend tour is built entirely around that intimacy.

When to Visit

The Granite Belt — Four Seasons, Four Reasons

Unlike most of Queensland, Stanthorpe genuinely experiences all four seasons. Each one is worth visiting for a completely different reason.

🌸
Spring
September – November

Apple blossoms, new-release wines, and ideal temperatures for vineyard walks and national park exploration. Crowds haven't yet arrived.

🍓
Summer
December – February

Berry picking season, sunflower fields in bloom, and warm days in the clean elevated air. A complete contrast to coastal Queensland heat and humidity.

🍂
Autumn ⭐ Our Pick
March – May

Harvest season. Falling leaves, hues of gold and burnt orange across the vines, grape picking action, and new-vintage releases direct from the barrel.

❄️
Winter
June – August

Log fires, frost on the vines, and occasional light snow. The famous Jumpers & Jazz Festival in July transforms the town into something magical.

The Wines

What You'll Taste on a Granite Belt Wine Tour

The Granite Belt is one of Australia's most exciting cool-climate wine regions. We prioritise small, owner-operated cellar doors — wines that tell the real story of place.

🍇

Cool-Climate Shiraz & Cabernet

Powerful but refined reds with plush dark fruit, earthy spice, and exceptional bottle-ageing potential. The elevation produces a structure you simply don't find in warmer Queensland growing regions — both classic and more modern, lighter styles are represented at each cellar door.

🥂

Chardonnay, Riesling & Verdelho

Bright stone fruit with crisp natural acidity on the Chardonnay; aromatic, floral, and refreshing Riesling; and Verdelho with that distinctive tropical fruit character unique to the Queensland altitude. These whites are the perfect contrast to the region's fuller reds.

🌿

Strangebird Alternative Varieties

The Granite Belt is home to the Strangebird Wine Trail — dedicated boutique producers growing varieties almost entirely unique to Australia, including Savagnin, Pinotage, Tempranillo, Graciano, and Gewürztraminer. Many are only available at their cellar door and never reach retail shelves. A genuine discovery experience.

🏺

Winemaker Meet & Greet

Barrel tastings, short winery tours, and unhurried conversations with the people who actually grew and made the wine. This kind of access is the defining difference between a guided Stanthorpe wine tour and showing up independently during a busy cellar door weekend.

Cellar Doors We Regularly Visit

Heritage Estate Wines

One of the region's most awarded estates, known for bold Shiraz and superb winemaker hospitality.

Ballandean Estate

Queensland's oldest family-owned winery — fourth-generation winemaking and an exceptional cellar door experience.

Ravens Croft Wines

Small-batch producers specialising in alternative varieties including the region's highly regarded Pinotage.

Girraween Estate Wines

Intimate tastings from the winemaking family, with seven wines and the kind of stories that make the trip memorable.

Savina Lane Wines

A Strangebird Wine Trail founding member, known for genuinely unusual varieties handled with extraordinary skill.

Symphony Hill Wines

Award-winning estate with beautiful grounds, a strong focus on sustainable viticulture, and exemplary cool-climate reds.

Cellar doors visited vary by season and availability. Private tours can specify preferred wineries at time of booking.

Brisbane · Autumn Weekend 2024

★★★★★

Everything was completely seamless — Mercedes transport, boutique accommodation, all meals, and the tastings. We visited wineries we'd never have found on a self-drive trip. The Strangebird alternative variety producers alone made the weekend worth it.

Gold Coast · Spring Weekend 2024

★★★★★

A perfect anniversary weekend. The sunset over the vines on Day 1 was genuinely one of the most beautiful things I've seen in Queensland. The winemaker at our final cellar door spent 45 minutes just talking to us. You can't buy that kind of experience on a self-drive tour.
