Six fascinating facts that make Hobbiton far more extraordinary than any film set has a right to be.
Hobbiton was originally constructed from plywood and polystyrene for The Lord of the Rings in 1999, then dismantled and the farmland restored. When Peter Jackson returned for The Hobbit in 2011, the set was rebuilt using permanent materials — concrete, steel, and real timber — so fans could experience it year-round, forever.
The famous Party Tree that shelters Bilbo's eleventy-first birthday celebration has one of the most labour-intensive backstories on the set. The real tree was fitted with thousands of individually hand-wired artificial leaves, colour-matched and shaped to achieve a specific autumnal look — a process that needed repeating before each phase of filming.
To make hobbit-sized doors and windows convincing alongside full-sized actors, the set uses forced perspective — the same technique Tolkien-era illustrators used on maps. Doors, windows, furniture, and garden details were scaled to different sizes in different areas of the set. Your guide will reveal which props are which, and why.
Hobbiton is not a purpose-built film park — it sits on the privately owned Alexander sheep farm near Matamata, chosen by helicopter by Peter Jackson himself for its untouched, storybook hills. The farm is still operational today. Sheep graze on the same hillsides that Gandalf's cart once rolled across on screen.
The Green Dragon Inn was constructed using traditional pub-building methods — real oak beams, stone floors, handmade furniture, and a working kitchen. The exclusive Hobbiton Brewery produces Southfarthing ales and lagers brewed specifically for the inn. Your complimentary drink on this tour uses genuine Hobbiton-produced beer or ginger beer.
Many of Hobbiton's most extraordinary details are invisible without an expert eye. Hidden fans pump smoke from chimneys. Clotheslines are arranged by fictional hobbit family sizes. Gardens are planted with vegetables at different stages of growth to suggest each household's harvest cycle. Every hole tells a different story — guides know every one.
