300+ Days of Sunshine Per Year
Why Brisbane for Seniors

Australia's Most Welcoming City for Senior Travellers

Brisbane is genuinely one of the best Australian cities for seniors to explore. The climate is mild and warm year-round, the major attractions have been progressively upgraded with accessibility in mind, and the city's compact CBD means there's very little unnecessary travel between highlights. Over 300 days of sunshine a year means outdoor activities are almost always possible.

At Cooee Tours we've been guiding seniors and retirees around Brisbane for over 35 years. Our tours aren't generic sightseeing buses with senior pricing applied — they're designed from the ground up with older travellers in mind: the right pace, the right vehicles, the right stops, and guides who genuinely enjoy the company of their guests.

Brisbane's Best Attractions

What You'll See & Experience

Each attraction on our senior tours has been personally assessed for accessibility, interest, and comfort.

🐨

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary — World's Oldest

Established in 1927, Lone Pine is the world's oldest and largest koala sanctuary with 130+ koalas in natural enclosures. The sanctuary is almost entirely accessible — level concrete paths throughout, wheelchairs available free at the entrance, accessible toilets near every exhibit area, and shaded seating at regular intervals. The koala cuddling experience is done at a standing height that suits most seniors, and the kangaroo meadow allows you to sit on benches while animals come to you. The platypus is visible from a specially designed elevated underwater viewing area. This remains our most-requested tour for seniors of all ages.

♿ Level paths throughout · Wheelchairs available free · All accessible toilets
🌊

Brisbane River — Scenic City Cruise

The Brisbane River defines this city in a way few urban waterways do anywhere in Australia. Winding 23 kilometres through Brisbane's heart, it creates spectacular views at every bend — Story Bridge (opened 1940), the original Kangaroo Point Cliffs (Aboriginal cultural significance), historic Victorian riverside mansions, Newstead House (Brisbane's oldest surviving residence, 1846), and the transformation of former industrial land into world-class cultural precincts. All cruise vessels are wheelchair accessible with ramps, comfortable indoor and outdoor seating, accessible toilets on board, and bilingual commentary available on request. The morning tea service uses proper china cups and homemade scones — a detail our senior guests consistently mention in their reviews.

♿ Wheelchair ramp boarding · Indoor seating · Accessible toilets on all vessels
🏔️

Mt Coot-tha — Brisbane's Best Views

At 287 metres above Brisbane, Mt Coot-tha provides the city's finest accessible panoramic viewpoint. The viewing deck at the Summit Restaurant has comfortable bench seating, shade shelters, and large viewing windows looking down across the entire city grid. On clear days — which in Brisbane is most days — you can identify Moreton Island, the Glass House Mountains, and both Story Bridge and the riverside suburbs in one sweep. The name "Coot-tha" derives from the Aboriginal word "ku-ta" meaning honey, referring to the native bees once abundant on this hillside. The adjacent Brisbane Botanic Gardens features 52 hectares including a Japanese Garden, a Fragrant Garden designed for vision-impaired visitors, and accessible boardwalk rainforest paths with seating at every turn.

Accessible viewing deck · Seating and shade throughout · Café at summit
🎨

South Bank Cultural Precinct

Transformed from the Expo 88 fairground site, South Bank is now Queensland's most visited destination and a genuinely world-class cultural precinct in a compact, flat, and beautifully accessible area. The Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) offer free entry to permanent collections spanning Australian, Indigenous, Asian, and contemporary art. The Queensland Museum houses Queensland's natural history, dinosaur exhibits, and Indigenous cultural collections. All cultural venues have elevators, disabled parking, hearing loop systems in performance spaces, and wheelchairs available for loan from information desks. The riverside parklands and bougainvillea arbour provide flat, shaded walking routes with café seating throughout.

♿ Fully accessible · Hearing loops · Wheelchairs available for loan · All flat surfaces

The Lone Pine koala tour was absolutely delightful. At 78, I wasn't sure I'd manage, but the pace was perfect and our guide was so patient. Holding a koala was a dream come true. The river cruise back was wonderfully relaxing. A perfect day out — highly recommended for any senior.

We're in our early 70s and loved the Brisbane River cruise — a peaceful, gentle way to see the city without exhausting walking. The morning tea was lovely with proper china cups. The Mt Coot-tha view was breathtaking. Our guide knew everything about Brisbane's history. Exactly what elderly travelers need.

As a wheelchair user, I was nervous about touring, but Cooee Tours made everything accessible and easy. The coach had a lift, all attractions were wheelchair-friendly, and our guide was wonderful. We saw koalas, cruised the river, and explored South Bank — all without any stress whatsoever.

Our retirement village group of 10 had the most wonderful day. Everyone got personal attention, the driver picked us up directly from the village, and the guide even remembered everyone's names by lunchtime. Small groups genuinely make such a difference. We're already planning our next trip.
