The Pacific Motorway (M1) northbound from the Gold Coast into Brisbane is reliably congested from Sunday 3–6 PM. The Bruce Highway from the Sunshine Coast follows a similar pattern. If you can leave by 1 PM Sunday, you'll be home before the traffic builds. For Byron Bay visitors, Sunday evening traffic through Coolangatta is the other pinch point worth noting.
