Discover the world's largest sand island — 4WD adventures across 75 Mile Beach, crystal-clear perched lakes, ancient rainforests, and humpback whale watching from Hervey Bay
Fraser Island, known as K'gari (meaning 'paradise') to the Butchulla people, its Traditional Owners, is one of the world's most extraordinary natural wonders. Stretching 123 kilometres along Queensland's Fraser Coast, this UNESCO World Heritage-listed island — officially renamed K'gari National Park in 2023 — is the world's largest sand island and home to half of all the world's perched freshwater lakes.
Join Cooee Tours for an unforgettable 4WD adventure across 75 Mile Beach, swim in the silica-white sands of Lake McKenzie, float down Eli Creek, walk the ancient rainforests of Central Station, and photograph the iconic Maheno Shipwreck. For those visiting between July and November, humpback whale watching from Hervey Bay's Platypus Bay is an unmissable experience.
Departing from Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, or Rainbow Beach, our expert-guided tours handle everything — including ferry transfers across the Great Sandy Straits.

75 Mile Beach is an official CASA-registered airport and 4WD highway
From crystal lakes to shipwrecks, volcanic headlands to coloured sand cliffs — every corner of K'gari delivers something extraordinary
One of the world's most pristine perched lakes — the silica-white sand and impossibly clear turquoise water make this K'gari's most iconic swimming spot. As a perched lake, it sits above the water table with no inflow or outflow, keeping it pure.
One of the longest natural beaches in the world and an officially gazetted CASA public airport. This golden sand highway runs the full length of K'gari's eastern coast, passing coloured sand cliffs, creeks, and the island's most spectacular landscapes.
The rusted iron hulk of the SS Maheno, a luxury 1905 ocean liner being towed to Japan for scrap when Cyclone Agatha drove it ashore in 1935. Now half-buried in sand, it's one of the most photographed subjects in Queensland. Walk right up to it at low tide.
The heart of K'gari — a former logging settlement now a lush rainforest sanctuary. Walk the famous boardwalk along Wanggoolba Creek, whose crystal water flows so slowly it appears still, passing ancient King Ferns (some 2 metres across) and towering 1,000-year-old satinay trees.
The largest freshwater creek on K'gari's eastern beach, pumping 80 megalitres of crystal-clear water daily into the ocean. Walk upstream along the boardwalk through paperbark and scribbly gum forest, then simply float downstream in the fast-flowing cool current.
Natural basalt rock pools at the northern end of K'gari where wild Pacific waves crash over the rocks, filling the pools with bubbling, foam-flecked water — like champagne. One of the only safe spots for ocean swimming on the island, perched dramatically above the surf.
Indian Head is K'gari's only exposed volcanic rock — a dramatic headland jutting into the Pacific. Climb to the top for sweeping 360° views of the island and ocean, and keep watch for sharks, manta rays, sea turtles, and between July and November, migrating humpback whales in the waters below.
A breathtaking 200-metre stretch of naturally coloured sand cliffs on the eastern beach, layered in vivid shades of red, orange, yellow, and white. The colours come from naturally occurring iron oxide in the sand — over 72 recorded shades. Also nearby: the quieter Lake Birrabeen, a favourite alternative to Lake McKenzie.
